Privacy Policy
Speaktionary Learning Inc. (“Speaktionary”, “we”, “us” or “our”) provides a vocabulary, pronunciation and learning service for families and tutors. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, retain and protect personal information when adults create and manage Speaktionary accounts and learners use the service under those accounts.
Phase 1A is designed so that the account holder is an adult parent, guardian, tutor or other authorized adult. Learners do not create their own accounts in Phase 1A.

Your adult account controls the service
We ask for only the information needed to create the account, run the trial/subscription and save learning progress. You can contact info@speaktionary.ca about privacy, access, corrections or deletion.
What we save
Adult account and subscription status. Account-level learning progress such as words practised, quizzes and curriculum progress. Support messages and necessary technical/security information. We do not intentionally save raw microphone audio in Phase 1A.
What we do not ask a learner for in Phase 1A
A child email address. A child date of birth. A child password or independent login. A standalone child profile.
If two children use one adult account
Their Phase 1A progress is combined at the account level. Separate learner profiles are not part of Phase 1A.
1. Who controls personal information
Speaktionary Learning Inc. is responsible for personal information under its control, including information processed by service providers on our behalf. Privacy questions and requests may be directed to the Privacy Officer, Speaktionary Learning Inc., c/o info@speaktionary.ca. Registered business address: Davenport Rd, Toronto, ON, Canada.
2. Information we collect
We collect only information reasonably required to operate the Phase 1A service. Depending on how you use Speaktionary, this may include the categories below.
- Adult account information: name, email address, account credentials or authentication identifiers, verification status and basic account settings.
- Subscription information: selected plan, trial status, subscription status, renewal/cancellation status and payment-related metadata provided by our payment processor. Speaktionary is not intended to store full payment-card numbers.
- Learning and progress information: words practised, quiz attempts and completion, scores where applicable, curriculum/unit progress, recent activity, streak/active-day information and similar account-level learning history.
- Support and feedback information: messages sent through contact/support forms, word reports, correction requests and correspondence with Speaktionary.
- Technical information: IP address, browser/device information, session and security logs, error information, and essential cookie/local-storage identifiers used to operate the service.
- Speech/pronunciation information: if the microphone feature is used, the browser/device speech-recognition service may process microphone audio to return recognized text or a pronunciation result. Speaktionary is designed not to intentionally store raw microphone audio in Phase 1A. We may store the resulting activity outcome (for example, completion or score) as part of learning progress.
Children and data minimisation
Phase 1A does not require a learner to provide an email address, date of birth, password or standalone child profile. A learner uses the service within the adult account. If multiple learners use one account, Phase 1A progress is combined at the account level.
3. How we use information
- Create, verify, authenticate and secure adult accounts.
- Provide vocabulary, pronunciation, quiz, curriculum, progress and related learning functionality.
- Administer the 7-day trial, subscriptions, entitlements, cancellations and account status.
- Provide customer service, password resets, service notices and other account communications.
- Diagnose errors, maintain reliability, prevent misuse and protect the security of Speaktionary.
- Maintain account-level learning progress so a user can continue where they left off.
- Comply with legal, accounting, security and regulatory obligations.
- Send marketing or promotional electronic messages only where permitted and with the appropriate consent; marketing consent is separate from acceptance of the Terms.
4. Learner use and parental/authorized-adult responsibility
Because Speaktionary is designed for use by children and learners, the adult account holder is responsible for authorizing and supervising learner use. Where meaningful consent must be provided on behalf of a child, the account holder represents that they are the parent/guardian or otherwise authorized to provide that consent.
5. Voice and microphone processing
When a learner chooses a microphone-based pronunciation feature, microphone audio may be processed by the browser, device platform or speech-recognition provider to recognize the spoken word. The current Phase 1A implementation uses browser-based speech recognition and is not represented as a Canada-only speech-processing architecture.
Speaktionary is designed not to intentionally retain raw voice recordings in Phase 1A. The speech provider may process information under its own terms and technical architecture. Users should always have a non-microphone fallback where reasonably possible (for example, typing or continuing without voice).
Depending on the browser, recognition may be performed on the browser maker’s servers rather than on the device (for example Google for Chrome, Apple for Safari, Microsoft for Edge).
6. Service providers and disclosures
We may use third-party service providers to operate Speaktionary. Depending on the production configuration, these may include:
- Base44 or successor infrastructure providers for application hosting, authentication, application data and related platform services;
- Stripe or another approved payment processor for subscription and payment processing;
- email delivery providers for account/service messages; the email verification code and the password-reset email are sent by our hosting platform;
- Google text-to-speech or other audio providers for spoken-word output;
- browser/device speech-recognition providers for microphone-based pronunciation recognition;
- Wordnik, dictionary or content APIs used to return definitions, vocabulary or related learning content;
- artificial-intelligence text and image services accessed through our hosting platform, which receive the word being looked up (never account information) to produce child-friendly definitions, examples, translations and pictures;
- other dictionary services (currently dictionaryapi.dev) and image libraries (currently Unsplash) used for word content and illustrations; and
- other infrastructure, security, monitoring or content-delivery providers needed to operate the service.
We do not sell personal information to advertisers. We may disclose information to service providers acting on our behalf, where required by law, to protect rights or security, or as part of a business transaction subject to appropriate safeguards.
7. Processing outside Canada
Some Phase 1A service providers may store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States or other jurisdictions. Information processed outside Canada may be subject to the laws and lawful-access rules of those jurisdictions. Speaktionary remains responsible for personal information under its control and should use contractual, technical and organizational safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information.
8. Cookies, local storage and similar technologies
Speaktionary may use essential cookies and browser storage for authentication, session continuity, security, preferences, entitlement state and core functionality. Non-essential analytics or marketing technologies should not be enabled without an appropriate consent mechanism and corresponding update to this Policy. See the Cookie, Browser Storage & Electronic Communications Notice below.
9. Retention and deletion
We retain personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, to support account reactivation, to meet legal/accounting obligations, to resolve disputes and to protect the service. When information is no longer required, it should be securely deleted, destroyed or anonymized.
Ending a trial or cancelling a subscription does not automatically delete the account or learning progress. This is intentional so the account holder can return and continue from the existing progress. An account holder may contact info@speaktionary.ca to request account deletion, subject to information we must retain for legal, fraud-prevention, accounting or security reasons.
We keep a minimal record that an email address has already used the free trial, so that deleting and recreating an account does not start a second trial.
10. Security
Speaktionary uses administrative, technical and organizational safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information. These should include role-based access, least-privilege permissions, secure authentication, environment/secrets controls, access logging where available, secure payment processing through the payment provider, and appropriate incident-response procedures. No internet service can guarantee absolute security.
Payment card details are entered on Stripe’s secure payment page and handled by Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified provider; Speaktionary never sees or stores full card numbers. Every page of the service is served over HTTPS.
11. Access, correction and privacy requests
Subject to applicable law, an account holder may request access to personal information Speaktionary holds about them, request correction of inaccurate information, withdraw consent where consent is the legal basis (subject to legal/contractual limits), or ask questions about privacy practices. Send requests to info@speaktionary.ca with the subject line “Privacy Request”. We may need to verify identity before fulfilling a request.
12. Privacy incidents
Speaktionary should maintain procedures for assessing, documenting and responding to privacy/security incidents. Where applicable law requires notification to affected individuals or a regulator, Speaktionary will make the required notifications.
13. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Policy as Speaktionary changes. If a change is material, we will provide appropriate notice and obtain fresh consent where required. The current version should always display its effective date.
14. Cookie, Browser Storage & Electronic Communications Notice
14.1 Essential browser technologies
Speaktionary may use cookies, local storage, session storage or comparable browser technologies that are necessary to authenticate users, maintain sessions, remember language/preferences, enforce trial/subscription entitlements, preserve security state and support core app functionality. Disabling essential browser storage may prevent parts of the Service from working.
Some learning state is also kept on your device so the app responds quickly: for example sight words marked as learned, a count of words looked up, and a cache of spoken-word audio. This stays in your browser and is not sent to us.
14.2 Analytics and marketing technologies
Phase 1A should not introduce non-essential advertising or behavioural-marketing cookies by default. If Speaktionary later adds non-essential analytics, advertising pixels or similar tracking, it should update this Notice and deploy an appropriate consent mechanism before those technologies are activated where required.
14.3 Transactional/service emails
Speaktionary may send service-related messages reasonably necessary to operate an account, such as email verification, password reset, security notices, trial/account status, subscription confirmation/cancellation and other transactional notices. Transactional messages should remain factual and should not be used as a disguised marketing channel.
14.4 Marketing communications
Marketing consent should be separate and optional. Where Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) applies, Speaktionary should obtain or document a valid consent basis, identify the sender and provide a readily usable unsubscribe mechanism. Unsubscribe requests must be actioned within the legally required period.
15. Contact
For access, correction, deletion or other privacy questions, contact info@speaktionary.ca with the subject “Privacy Request”.
